For some time now, teledermatology has been hailed as the future of dermatology. Even before the pandemic, there was much discussion around the potential of this technology and some early adoption within clinical practice. Recent events, however, have sped up its uptake, and experiencing this first-hand on the front line in the past few months has provided me with insightful – and some amusing – lessons.
At the peak of the pandemic, the clinic telephone became the most important tool for consultations. Before this, I don’t recall using a landline so much since the 2000s. Reacquainting myself with this 'old school' technology took me back to memories of coming home after school and shouting at my family to not pick up the phone while it was my turn to use it.
